The New Test

As a result of the 2nd European Driving Licence Directive, the UK is required to implement certain changes to our Motorcycle Test. The result of this Directive is that our existing test is being extended to include a series of additional manoeuvres designed to highlight a riders ability to handle their machine.

These manoeuvres will be conducted on an off road area. To conduct this part of the test safely, new larger test centres, known as Multi-Purpose Test Centres (MPTC's) are required, and the Driving Standards Agency is building these across the UK.

The New Test has two separate components, referred to as Module 1 (Specified Manoeuvres) and Module 2 (The Road Riding Test). They have to be taken and passed in sequence. Module 1 is the off road element and will comprise of a series of skills exercises and manoeuvres as listed below:

Getting your bike on and off the stand - This can be either the main or side stand.

Controlling the bike when pushing it - This will involve pushing the machine backwards between two sets of cones in a reverse U-Turn.

The slalom - Ride through 5 cones in a slalom.

The figure of eight - Ride a figure of eight between two cones. (Two circuits)

30kph circuit ride. (18.6 mph) - This involves riding the curve at one end of the defined area at a controlled speed of 30 kph.

Hazard Avoidance - You will be required to ride at a minimum speed of 50 kph (31.1 mph) between the timing gates before changing direction to either the left or right, as directed by the examiner. This exercise is designed to ensure that all motorcyclists are equipped with the skills necessary to avoid another road user “pulling out” in front of them. You are given two attempts to pass this part of the test.

Controlled stop - After you have changed direction you must perform a controlled stop, bringing your machine to a stop within a defined area.

The U-Turn - This must be completed in between two lines that are 7.5 metres apart. This replaces the need for a U-Turn during the on-road Module 2.

Control at low speed – You will be required to ride over a distance of 10 metres at walking pace. This is to simulate riding in slow moving traffic, and must be completed without putting you feet down.

A further 30kph circuit ride - This involves riding the curve again at 30 kph.

The Emergency Stop – To perform the emergency stop exercise, you must again come through the timing gates above the minimum speed of 50 kph; you are given two attempts to pass this part of the test.

On the completion of Module 1, you will be given a Pass/Fail sheet (DL25MC). Only when having a pass result can you attend Module 2. Your Module 1 pass certificate remains valid until the expiry of your Theory Pass Certificate.
